The ability to speak Spanish is useful for some of the roles the volunteers perform, and is necessary for others. Volunteers with advanced Spanish skills usually spend more time working directly with the families and children.
- I would like to volunteer but I have not made living arrangements. Where can I do that?
If you prefer, you may find your own lodging or request hotel/hostel suggestions.
- How do I arrange transportation from the airport to my living arrangement?
- What is the weather like in Antigua, Guatemala?
- At what altitude is Antigua?
- Should I bring an electrical convertor?
- How should I carry my money in Guatemala? Cash? ATM card? Travellers’ checks?
- Do I need medical insurance to volunteer with Asociación Nuestros Ahijados?
- Should I get any vaccinations or bring any medications with me to Guatemala?
The Center for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) recommends the following vaccinations:
Tetanus Toxoid or DT (a combination of tetanus and diphtheria)
Hepatitis A (2 shot series)
Hepatitis B (3 shot series)
Typhoid
The CDC does not recommend purchasing anti-malaria drugs since the risk in Antigua is very low.
For more information on staying healthy while in Guatemala please visit the following website: http://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/destinations/guatemala.htm
o Make sure to get enough of your prescription medications to last the entire length of your stay in Guatemala. If you use an inhaler and/or EpiPens, make sure to bring enough for the duration of your trip. Those who wear glasses and/or contact lenses should bring an additional pair of glasses as well as contact solution.
o Many travellers also like to bring a prophylactic antibiotic prescription which helps fight harmful bacteria or viruses contracted through ingesting contaminated food or water. Pepto Bismol, multivitamins, pain relievers, and flu & cold medicines are also beneficial to travel with.
- How can I avoid stomach issues while in Guatemala?
o Eat only cooked vegetables.
o Eat only fruit that you peel yourself. Don’t eat already cut or peeled fruit.
o Eat only well cooked meat and fish. Ground meat with any traces of pink is not cooked enough.
o Consume only pasteurized milk or cheese.
o Avoid cream pastries and potato or tuna salad.
- Will my valuables be safe in Guatemala?
o Keep close watch on your belongings, especially in a crowd.
o Consider using a money belt in which you can keep passport, credit cards, and extra cash.
o We highly recommended not walking alone after 9pm.
o Most importantly, use your common sense. Do not make yourself an obvious target.
